Library and Information Technology Internship: Job Journal Introduction
For my internship, I am working at the Belle Cooledge Library, which is part of the Sacramento Public Library system. The library system serves residents throughout the Sacramento area by providing access to books, digital resources, technology, and educational programs for the community. Public libraries play an important role in supporting literacy, lifelong learning, and equal access to information.
The patrons who use this library represent a wide variety of community members, including families, students, seniors, and individuals who rely on the library for internet access and other essential services. Many patrons visit the library to borrow books, use public computers, attend programs, or find a quiet space for studying and reading.
The library maintains a diverse collection of materials that includes books, audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, and digital resources such as e-books and online databases. These materials support the informational, educational, and recreational needs of the community.
The Belle Cooledge Library provides many services to patrons, including public computers, Wi-Fi access, printing services, reference assistance, and library programs for children, teens, and adults. The branch also offers circulation services where patrons can check out, return, and renew materials. Staff members assist patrons with locating materials, using library technology, and accessing online resources.
The library facility is located in the South Land Park area of Sacramento. The building includes areas for collections, seating for reading and studying, public computers, and service desks where staff assist patrons. The library is designed to be welcoming and accessible to all members of the community.
During my internship, I am gaining experience in circulation services, assisting patrons, and learning about the daily operations of a public library. This journal will document what I learn throughout the internship, the tasks I perform, and the skills I develop while working in a public library environment.
