Branch Tasks and Responsibilities
During my internship at the Belle Cooledge Library, part of the Sacramento Public Library system, I learned more about how branch tasks and responsibilities are assigned among staff. At SPL it is common for branch supervisors to assign specific tasks to Library Assistants. At my branch, these assignments rotate approximately every one to two years. This rotation helps ensure that the branch does not depend on only one person for a specific task and that at least one other staff member knows how to complete the work or can serve as a substitute if someone is out on PTO.
Before our recent reassignment of duties, my branch tasks included serving as the Safety Committee liaison for the branch. In this role, I represented my branch at system-wide safety meetings and helped communicate safety-related issues and updates between the branch and the library system.
I was also responsible for managing book displays, especially the Staff Picks display, and for handling branch-level holds on books. Branch-level holds are requests made by staff to bring materials from across the library system for displays, staff recommendations, or programs. However, if a book already has a patron hold, the patron’s request takes priority.
During a recent staff meeting we reassigned some branch responsibilities, and I was given a new role managing branch supply ordering. This includes placing orders through vendors such as Staples, submitting purchase requests for non-approved vendors, restocking library materials from general supply stock at Central, and maintaining the organization of the branch supply closet.
In addition to these responsibilities, I continue to assist with processing periodicals and handling interlibrary loans through Link+. These tasks help support the library’s ability to provide access to materials beyond our local collection.
Through these responsibilities I am learning more about the behind-the-scenes operations that keep a public library running effectively and how staff share responsibilities to support the needs of the community.
